Privacy Policy Statement

The Mobile Usage Project is an indepentdent scientific research project of the Network Research Lab in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Pittsburgh. The project is created as part of PJ Dillon's doctoral research.

For questions regarding our privacy policies, we can be reached by email at pdillon@cs.pitt.edu or by phone at (412) 624-8442.

What information is collected

Our mobile device software collects the following information from its users: a unique device identifier and occasional latitudinal and longitudinal coordinates. Where possible, the unique identifier is a value associated only with the device and not with its user. Specifically for the iPhone, this is the Unique Device Identifier (UDID). For other devices, the unique identifier could be the device's associated phone number or SIM card identifier.

Over time, we collect the position of the device as reported by the device's location services, which is stored together with this unique identifier. For the iPhone, this occurs only when the user voluntarily starts up The Mobile Usage Project Application.

No information is collected from users who directly visit this website. No cookies are used in delivering this website to visitor's browsers.

We share this information with:

No one.

All personally identifiable information is kept confidential. No information will ever be sold to third parties or used in any way outside the scope of conducting research.

Aggregate research results will be shared publicly, but all device identifiers will be replaced with random, anonymous values prior to any dataset disclosure.

Security

We have appropriate security measures in place in our physical facilities to protect against the loss, misuse or alteration of information that we have collected through our software.
